Wilma Gorp

March 26, 1921 — January 21, 2009

Wilma Mary Van Gorp, the daughter of William B. and Mina Mouw was born on March 26, 1921. She was raised in Sioux Center, Iowa, where she graduated from High School in 1939.On July 18, 1941 she married Earl E. Van Gorp in Sioux Center, Iowa. In Dec. of 1942 Earl was drafted into the military and Wilma as a new bride and mother moved back with her parents for three years, while Earl served his country.In December of 1948 Earl and Wilma moved to a farm south of Montevideo where they farmed and raised their family. After retiring in August of 1986 they moved into Montevideo and remained in their home until July 2007 when they became residents of Brookside Manor.After moving to Montevideo Wilma was one of the charter members organizing and starting Hope Reformed Church in January of 1949. She remained an active and willing member until her death. She enjoyed doing volunteer work at the nursing home, meals on wheels, and helping at DAC. In her life she enjoyed handwork of all kinds and was always anxious to learn a new skill. She loved music, was an avid reader, had beautiful gardens and was a very creative strong lady. She was always keenly interested in her family and took great pride and joy in her grandchildren and great-grandchildren. Survivors include her husband Earl, three children and their spouses: Wanda and Richard Oftedahl of Battle Lake, Minnesota, Dr. Paul Van Gorp and Bobbi Knutson of Long Prairie, Minnesota, Dr. Bryan and Susan Van Gorp of Rushford, Minnesota. Survivors also include 10 grandchildren, 1 step grandson, 12 great-grandchildren, and 2 step great-grandchildren. One sister Harriet De Boer of Fort Collins, Colorado also survives. She was preceded in death by her parents and a daughter, Mary Beth Stenson. Also preceded by three brothers and two sisters Benjamin Mouw, Neal Mouw, Marvin Mouw, Alice Straatsma and Johanna Van Binsbergen. ?Blessed be the memory of Wilma among us?. ?Thank you Father for the gift of memory, which allows us to hold close the ones we love, even after they are with you?.
