Victor Vernon Steinbach was born on October 16, 1929 in Minnesota Falls Township, Yellow Medicine County, MN, the son of Joseph H. and Alice C. (Schlenner) Steinbach. He was baptized and confirmed in the Christian faith at St. Paul’s Lutheran Church in Granite Falls and graduated from Granite Falls High School.
Vic enlisted in the Army with his brother Don in December 1948 so they could serve together. Vic served as a Sergeant in D Battery AAA Gun Battalion during the Korean Conflict, receiving his honorable discharge on December 5, 1951. On May 23, 1953, he was united in marriage to Geneva Delilah Docken at Our Savior’s Lutheran Church in Sacred Heart, MN. To this union two children were born, Diane and Gene. In 1954 at death of Geneva’s mother, Vic became guardian for Geneva’s 3 younger siblings: John, Ardell, and Rosella.
During his working years, Vic started out working for his father in the carpentry business as a mason. He also worked at the local creamery for a time. For most of his life however, Vic was employed as a truck driver. He was known for his unique sense of humor and his ability to get along with everyone he met. He enjoyed wood working and made several items including knife holders, plant stands and baby cradles. He enjoyed spending time with his family and friends, shaking dice with the coffee crew at Kathy’s Place. He was a faithful member of Our Savior’s Lutheran Church of Sacred Heart and the Veterans of Foreign Wars Post of Granite Falls.
On Sunday August 30, 2015, Vic passed away peacefully while a resident of the Granite Falls Manor, having been there 6 days. He was 85 years of age.
Surviving family include his wife Geneva of Granite Falls; his daughter Diane (& Lee) Davis of Redwood Falls, his son Gene (& JoAnn) Steinbach of Granite Falls; 7 grandchildren- Troy (& Shanlee) Davis, Candice (& Jeff) Hoppe, Brandon Davis, Dustin Steinbach, Veronica Steinbach, Aaron (& Stacey) Steinbach and Jonathan (& Angie) Steinbach; 9 great grandchildren- Alea, Ty, Thayden, Sierra, Ellianna, Max, Henry, Samaira & Victor; his sister Alvina Beckman of Olivia and many friends and extended family.
He was preceded in death by his parents; his sister Arline Imes; and four brothers- Francis, Edwin, Raymond and Donald.
