Vernice Stegeman, age 94, of New London and formerly of Montevideo passed away on Monday, September 6, 2021 at Glen Oaks Senior Living in New London. Funeral Services will be held Tuesday, September 14, 2021 at 10:30 AM at St. Paul’s Lutheran Church with interment following at Terrace Lawn Memory Garden in Montevideo. Visitation will be Monday from 5:00-7:00 PM at Wing-Bain Funeral Home in Montevideo with a Prayer Service and Time of Sharing at 7:00 PM.
Vernice Tressa Martha Stegeman was born on February 19, 1927 in Havelock Township, Minnesota. She was the daughter of Edward and Emma (Mottewa) Lettau. Vernice was baptized and confirmed at Trinity Lutheran Church of Havelock. She attended country school and went on to complete beautician training in Minneapolis.
On June 11, 1947, Vernice married Ray Stegeman at Trinity Lutheran Church of Havelock and began life together in Pennock, Minnesota. Together they were blessed with two daughters, Pamela and Patrice. In 1950, they moved to Montevideo. Vernice worked as a hairdresser and then helped her Dad manage the Monte Hotel. When the hotel was sold, she started working at the Montevideo Hospital until she retired.
When Vernice was young, she had a horse named Star which left her with many happy memories. She learned to play the accordion and thoroughly enjoyed playing for herself and family. Vernice loved flowers and enjoyed crocheting and embroidery. Vernice and Ray traveled extensively visiting every state and several other countries.
Vernice is survived by her daughters, Pam Zimmer of Willmar, Pat (Larry) Smoley of Warsaw, MN; grandchildren, Kelli (Chad) Petersen, Karla (Justin) Cronen, Ross (special friend, Mario) Zimmer, Traci (Steve) Warren, Terry (Lara) Smoley, Nancy (John) Smoley; great grandchildren, Connor Petersen, Caleb Petersen, Katy Petersen, Brady Cronen, Alyssa Cronen, Tyler Cronen, Kylie Cronen, Malia Warren, William Warren, Thomas Warren, Evan Smoley, Ivy Smoley, Gwen Smoley, Daphne Smoley, Julia Smoley; sister-in-law, Fern Stegeman; as well as nieces, nephews, other relatives and friends..
Vernice is preceded in death by her parents, Ed and Emma Lettau; husband, Ray; son-in-law, Russell Zimmer; sister, Verna (Clyde) Eisenlohr; brother, Virgil (Esther) Lettau; brothers and sisters-in-law, Henry Stegeman; William (Annie) Stegeman, Gertie (Fred) Rand, Irene (Leo) Goldenstein.
