Thomas Eugene Thein was born on May 13, 1940, near Clara City, MN, in Chippewa County, the son of John J. and Rose Katherine (Thissen) Thein. He was baptized and confirmed in the Catholic faith in St. Clara Catholic Church Clara City, of which he was a lifelong, faithful member. He attended and graduated from St. Clara Catholic School and received his secondary education at St. John’s University and earned his BA degree at St. Cloud State University.
Tom worked his entire life for Thein Moving Company, representing a third generation of movers along with his brother and business partner- Jim. Tom passed his passion for the family business onto his son, Matt, who continues Tom’s legacy along with his nephew, Tim. Toward the end of his moving career, Tom enjoyed the opportunity to help pull the building to its new site.
On June 29, 1968, Tom was united in marriage to the love of his life, Margaret Ann ‘Peggy’ Hermanson in St. Cloud, MN. They had met at the University of MN Hospital when Tom had undergone a kidney transplant in 1967. The kidney having been donated by his brother, Tony. Out of this nearly life ending situation came the blessings of a new life and a family that has proliferated to the present time. Tom and Peggy made their home in Clara City, MN and to this union three children were born- Molly, Amy & Matt. Tragically, Amy died in 1987 from injuries received in an automobile accident.
Tom was a devoted husband, father and grandfather. His grandkids lovingly called him ‘BopBop’ and in his earlier years you could always find Tom tending his garden…..that is unless he was working with Thein Moving Company! Tom enjoyed spending time with his family at home and at the lake. He was committed to making Clara City a great place to live and volunteered his talents as a CCD teacher, a lector and parish council president at St. Clara Catholic Church. He also loved to read, especially stories of WWII.
Tom was a survivor. He also processed a deep faith in his creator and carried a positive attitude right until his final hour. He passed away peacefully on Wednesday April 27, 2016, surrounded by family. He is survived by his loving wife Peggy of Clara City, MN; his daughter Molly (& David) Foster of St. Paul, MN; their children- Olivia, Isaac & Dillon; Matt (& Nikki) Thein of New London, MN; their children- Peter, Sara, Nathan, Timothy & Jack; sisters- Katherine (& Lowell) Skjeveland and Mary Jean Thein; brothers- Anthony Thein, James (& Sherri) Thein and John (& Pam) Thein; nieces, nephews and extended family.
Tom was preceded in death by his parents and his daughter Amy.
