Sylvia Skrukrud Profile Photo
On January 30, 1919, Sylvia Manda Skrukrud was the first baby born in the "new" Appleton, Minnesota hospital; a fact of which she was very proud. Her equally proud parents were Stephen and Manga Lund. She was baptized and confirmed into the Lutheran faith. The family moved to Chippewa County where Sylvia attended school in Asbury, Maynard and graduated with the Granite Falls High School Class of 1937. She married Clarence Sandberg on March 26, 1938. Clarence passed away in 1968. On February 12, 1972, Sylvia was married to Marvin Skrukrud. Marvin passed away in April 2003. For 14 years, Sylvia cooked for Clarence's road construction crew. She was employed by Granite Falls Hospital and later the Manor and from 1978 to 1986, she worked for Oak's Drive Inn. In her leisure time, she enjoyed crocheting, sewing, cooking, socializing with friends, attending church services with Joan, playing cards and bingo and just being on the go as much as her body would allow her to. Over the years, she became known as the ?Candy Lady?, especially by young children. She loved to carry candy treats (particularly Snickers mini bars) in her purse and would tuck them in the palm of her hand and, with a twinkle in her eye, give them to those she met throughout her day. Snicker mini treats are being served today in her honor. She maintained her own home until her health failed her and she moved to the Clarkfield Care Center in January of this year. On Saturday evening, April 27th, 2013, the Lord wrapped His arms around her and called her to His heavenly home. Cherishing Sylvia's memory are her daughters and their families: Joan and DuWayne Johnson of Granite Falls and their children, Matthew Johnson of Granite Falls and Sylena Johnson of Orlando, Florida; Susan and Bruce Haugland of LeSueur and their children, Mary Sue and Jerry Meger of Belle Plaine, parents of Jacob, Abby and Alex Meger; Katherine and Dan Gatchell of Eden Prairie, parents of Madison and Britta Gatchell; her sisters Theola Velde of Alexandria, Mavis Weingartner of Bloomington and Eunice Skeie of Granite Falls as well as many nieces and nephews. In addition to her parents, Stephen and Manga Lund, she was preceded in death by her sister Mary Jane Erickson, her husbands Clarence Sandberg and Marvin Skrukrud, and her brothers-in-law George Velde, Charles Erickson, Andy Weingartner and Newell Skeie. May her memory be blessed.
