Stephen Maurice "Steve" Hubert was born on September 11, 1948, in Granite Falls, MN, the son of Morris and Betty Hubert. He was baptized on October 19, 1948, at Our Savior's Lutheran church in Sacred Heart and confirmed in the Lutheran faith on May 17, 1964 at Ebenezer Lutheran Church in Sacred Heart. He attended elementary school in Granite Falls and graduated from Granite Falls High School. He then attended Mesa Jr. College in San Diego, CA and Minnesota Community & Technical College. Steve was inducted into military service in 1968 and served his country in the United States Navy in various air squadrons on bases throughout the free world. He was a true patriot and received his honorable discharge, (which included 4 Good Conduct Medals and a Meritorious Unit Commendation), retiring in 1988. He was united in marriage to Sherilyn Mack in San Diego, CA on October 4, 1975.Steve was a businessman and active member of the Granite Falls Community. He assisted his father-in-law, Howard Mack in his commercial fishing business for a time, eventually owning and operating Valley Indoor Golf. He served on the Granite Falls City council, the Granite Falls Fire & Rescue Squad, the Granite Falls VFW and American Legion Honor Guard, the Granite Falls Lutheran Church Council and was an advisory member of the Southwest Minnesota Initiative Fund. He was a strong supporter of the development of area youth and supported the local high school golf teams by allowing them access to his downtown facility for practice. Steve took great pride in being a role model and mentor to his nephews and enjoyed tending to his home and yard, especially when his granddaughter assisted him. He was a proud member of the Patriot Guard and the Red Knights motorcycle organizations. Steve was also a devoted, loving husband, father, grandfather, brother and uncle.For the past 15 years, Steve had courageously fought renal cell cancer, enduring a kidney removal, 3 chest surgeries, over 50 CT scans and MRI's and numerous treatments of ground breaking cancer drugs, brain and thoracic surgical procedures. Through all of his physical trials, Steve kept a positive, Christian outlook. He was peacefully called from this life during the late evening hours of Saturday, February 18, 2012, while surrounded by family and loved ones at the Granite Falls Municipal Hospital. He was 63 years of age.Surviving family include his wife Sherilyn of Granite Falls; his daughter Stepheni Hubert and granddaughter Piper Hubert, both of Blaine; siblings- Vickie Duis of Richfield, Kent (& Shelly Runia) Hubert of Granite Falls, Julie (& Roger) Brovold of Woodbury, Robert (& Barb Reinke) Hubert of Granite Falls and Rosie (& Mario) Falla of Chaska; 15 nephews; 14 nieces; 18 great nephews and 14 great nieces.He was preceded in death by his parents and two brothers- Bradley Joe & Timothy.
