Stanley Smith, age 85, of Montevideo passed away Monday, October 30, 2023 at his home. A Mass of Christian Burial will be held Wednesday, November 8, 2023 at 11:00 AM at St. Joseph’s Catholic Church with interment in the church cemetery. Visitation will be one hour prior to the services at the church.
Stanley Smith was born on November 5, 1937 in Morton, Minnesota, the son of A. E. and Inez (Nunn) Smith. He attended school in Montevideo after moving here when he was nine years old. Stanley enlisted in the United States Army. Upon completing multiple tests, his talents as a young man were recognized and he served in the secret service department of the U.S. Army.
Stanley was united in marriage to Judith Montagne on April 15, 1961 at St. Joseph Catholic Church in Montevideo. The couple soon moved to the Cities where Stan started working for the State Patrol. His dream was to become a broadcaster which prompted him to attend Brown Institute of Broadcasting. Though he never was able to work in radio, he did read his own poetry for a local radio station.
Stan and Judi moved to the Brainerd Lakes area in 1967, and Stan continued to work as a communication officer until his retirement in 1997. He also had various side jobs through the years which added to unique stories he could share with friends later in life which included security guard for armored trucks, police chief of Baxter, Minnesota as well as Mayor for Baxter. In 2007, Stan and Judi moved back to Montevideo and he was a member of St. Joseph’s Catholic Church and the American Legion.
Stan was patriotic through and through. He enjoyed gardening, working in his yard, collecting Hot Wheels, camping with friends and family. One may be surprised, but Stan wrote poetry and was even published. He had a soft heart, especially for children in need and he would quietly step in to help. Stan’s love for animals was well known and the neighborhood cats loved Stan most.
Stanley is survived by his wife, Judi Smith of Montevideo; daughter, Pam (John) Swanson of Makinen; grandchildren, Jake Crowley, Caitlyn McLain, Sierra Sky McLain, Kira McLain; as well as other relatives and friends. He was preceded in death by his father, A. E. Smith; mother, Inez Woltjer; son, Terry; brothers and sisters.
