Shirley Refsland, age 84, of Montevideo, passed away on December 20, 2021 at her home. A Memorial Service will be held on Thursday, December 30, 2021 at 11:00 AM at Our Savior’s Lutheran Church in Montevideo. Visitation will be held on Wednesday, December 29, 2021 from 5:00 – 7:00 PM at Wing-Bain Funeral Home in Montevideo, and will continue one hour prior to the service at the church. Interment will be at the Terrace Lawn Memory Garden.
Shirley Ann Refsland was born on September 19, 1937, to Adolph and Jeanette Couet in Granite Falls, Minnesota. She was baptized on December 5, 1937, at Granite Falls and later confirmed in her faith. Shirley attended school in Granite Falls and graduated in 1955.
Shirley was united in marriage to Jacob Refsland on May 26, 1957 at Granite Falls Lutheran Church. The couple began their life together in Granite Falls and were blessed with two children, Sharol and Dean. Shirley worked at Granite Falls Hydraulics and Granite Falls Bank. In 1965, the family moved to Montevideo and she began working at the Montevideo Bank, and later the KDMA radio and the Montevideo High School.
Shirley was a loving wife and mother. She was an artist and so very talented. Shirley loved to create, she would see a quilt pattern and figure out the pattern and replicate it. She enjoyed sewing, golfing, took classes on ceramic painting and stain glass. Shirley loved children and children loved her. She valued her faith and served with the WELCA and the OSLC. She was a Sunday school teacher and would assist in other areas at the church. Shirley was also a member of the Flying Gees Quilt Club.
Shirley is survived by her husband, Jacob Refsland of Montevideo; daughter, Sharol (Mike) Rude of Brainerd, MN; son, Dean (Kelly) Refsland of Richmond; grandchildren, Amanda (fiancé, Eric Prachar) Gibson, Chelsea (Eleazer) Briones, Jordann (Nick) James, Gabriel (fiancée, Maddie Drewiczak) Gibson, Cameron (Brittany) Refsland, Adam (special friend, Kayla Marks); step grandchildren, Brad (Kael) Rude, Mitch Rude, Alec (special friend, Abi Seipke), Tyler (special friend, Jen Colb), Kayla (Kyle) Kunde, Tanner (Mary) Sifferath, Karly (Brock) Zeller; great grandchildren, James, Makynlee, Eleazor III, Ian, Keira, Aiden, Memphis, Ledger, Braden, Cadence, Parker, Cason, Bennett and one on the way; step great grandchildren, Asher, Taeson, Mae, Ella; siblings, Roy Couet, Betty Miller, Ellamae Sander, Rose (Wayne) Hubin, Jerry (Becky) Couet, Rita (Stan) Meisinger, Dale (Janet) Couet; as well as nieces, nephews and other relatives.
Shirley was preceded in death by her parents, Adolph and Jeannette Couet.
