Shirley Joanne Kruger was born April 26, 1935, in Crate Township, Clara City, Minnesota, the daughter of Henry and Anna (Ammerman) Goldenstein. She passed away Tuesday, October 18, 2016, at Rice Memorial Hospital in Willmar, Minnesota.
She was baptized and confirmed at Bethany Reformed Church in Clara City. Shirley grew up and attended school in Clara City, graduating from Clara City High School in 1953.
On January 27, 1955, Shirley was united in marriage to Delmer Kruger at Bethany Reformed Church. To this union five children were born.
Shirley loved the farm life she shared with Delmer, raising crops and a variety of livestock. She enjoyed working for hours in her flower and vegetable gardens and maintaining her lawn. After the kids were in bed, she made wedding cakes for many local couples.
As her kids were growing up, she sewed most of their clothes and had continued to repair jeans, sew buttons and hem for many. She took great pride in her detail of quilting, both at home and at Immanuel with her quilting friends.
After her kids were in school, she added working in retail, starting with the Big V Store, Roger’s, and Rhode’s.
Shirley was a member of WELCA and active with Immanuel Lutheran Church Quilters. She enjoyed sharing flowers from her garden with the congregation, serving on the flower committee for many years.
Shirley enjoyed baking for her children and grandchildren’s events (especially caramel rice krispie and chocolate marble bars). She liked to bake goodies for friends and entertaining at her home (occasionally with a single glass of wine). Her home, like her clothes, was always full of twinkle. She enjoyed decorating for all holidays, but Christmas was her favorite
Shirley is survived by her children: LuAnn of Raymond; Kathy (Marc) Gruenenwald of Ottertail; Brad (Laurie) of Clara City; Brian (Marj) of Maynard; Steve (Trish) of Clara City; 13 grandchildren; 12 great grandchildren; sister Marcia (Russell) Onnen of Raymond; brother Robert (Barb) Goldenstein of Dalton; in-laws, Lois (Roger) Fjerkenstad, Margaret Kruger, and Lorna Kruger; and other extended family.
She was preceded in death by her parents, Henry and Anna; husband Delmer in 1991; nephew, Gregg Goldenstein; brothers-in-law, Dean and Harold Kruger.
