Sherman Bakken was born in Appleton, Minnesota, on November 16, 1939, to Rudolph and Minnie (Running) Bakken. He was baptized at Long Lake Lutheran Church in Appleton and confirmed at Drywood Lutheran Church. Sherman grew up on a farm near Appleton, Minnesota, and attended school there.
Sherman was united in marriage to the love of his life, Darlene Olson, on April 13, 1957. The couple made their home in Appleton where they started their family. Sherman and Darlene moved to Moorhead before moving to Granite Falls in 1963 and it’s been home ever since. The couple was blessed with four children, Mark, Brad, Jan and Michael.
Sherman took great pride in his work and was first a lead man and then a supervisor at Victor Fluid Power in Granite Falls. He was a member of Granite Falls Lutheran Church and usually was the first one there on Sunday morning. It was his strong faith in God which sustained him throughout his life. Sherman enjoyed hunting, woodworking, gardening, camping and having coffee with the men’s coffee group. He was a family man at heart and deeply loved his wife.
Sherman is survived by his children, Mark (Vicki) Bakken of Granite Falls, Brad (Mary Jo) Bakken of Granite Falls, Janette (Matt) Gordon of St. Cloud, Michael (Mary) Bakken of Stillwater; grandchildren, Heidi (Craig) Bakkelund, Ryan (Jess) Bakken, Jared Bakken, Bridget (Brad) Harvey, Courtney (special friend, Bob Meade) Gordon, Cole (Hanna) Gordon, Nicholas (Sabrina) Bakken, Holly (Michael) Whiting, Brooke Bakken; great grandchildren, Taylor, Jordan, Carter, Shandi, Avry, Brennan, Laela, Madison, Logan, Connor, Matthew, Shanelle, Quinten, Evelyn, Scarlett, Knox, Haven; siblings, Ardis (Jake) Lillestol of Fergus Falls, Roger Bakken of Shakopee, Bruce (Gloria) Bakken of Lake Zurich, IL, Glen (Linda) Bakken of Aitkin, Monica (Cecil) Brown of Conway, SC, Donna (Joe) Schuelke of Marshall; as well as nieces, nephews, other relatives and friends.
On Saturday, June 22, 2019, Sherman passed away at Methodist Hospital in St. Louis Park. He reached the age of 79 years, 7 month and 6 days. Blessed be his memory.
Sherman was preceded in death by his beloved wife, Darlene; parents, Rudolph and Minnie Bakken; great grandson, Hunter Bakkelund; infant sister, Beth Bakken.
