Sara Ellen Schmidt was born July 11, 1919, in Macomb, Ill., the daughter of Verne & Ruth (Parliman) Kernal. She resided in Illinois until her family moved to Minnesota in 1925. Sara was baptized in the Methodist faith and attended grade school in Redwood County, Minnesota. In 1933, her family moved to Wood Lake, where she finished her education, graduating in 1937.
On September 24, 1938, Sara was united in marriage to Arthur Schmidt in the Methodist parsonage in Franklin, MN. They made their home in Granite Falls and in 1940 Sara was confirmed in the Lutheran faith and became a member of St. Paul Lutheran Church in Granite Falls.
Along with raising a family, Sara worked many years as a waitress. She started working at Plews in 1966 and retired in 1982 at the age of 63 years.
Sara was a proud member of the Granite Falls American Legion Auxiliary and all four of her sons served in the United States Armed Forces. She loved living life to the fullest and her passion for dancing and having fun kept her young at heart. She will always be remembered for her ‘quick wit’ and sense of humor.
Surviving family include her 7 children- Orville (& Jetta) Schmidt of Boise, Idaho, Beverly Gabbert (& special friend LeRoy Oscarson) of Newport, WA; Richard Schmidt (& special friend Janet Snow) of Newport, WA; Douglas (& Esther) Schmidt of Wood Lake, David Schmidt of Sacred Heart, Julie (& Kerry) Steffen of Granite Falls, and Linda Bestland (& special friend Gary Hogen) of Bloomington; 15 grandchildren; 24 great grandchildren; 1 great great grandchild; her sister-in-law Pearl Hempel of Granite Falls, numerous nieces, nephews and extended family.
She was preceded in death by her parents; her husband; 2 sisters Eloise Roe & Janet Scanlon; her brother Warren Kernal, sons-in-law David Gabbert and Lynn Bestland, and granddaughter Shannon Steffen.
