Richard Owen ‘Dick’ Goulson was born on April 10, 1935, in Mandt Township, Chippewa County, Minnesota, the son of Thomas and Mathilda (Oddan) Goulson. He was baptized and confirmed in the Lutheran faith in Mandt Lutheran Church. His education began in rural District #54 through the eighth grade and then high school in Milan. He served as president for his graduating class of 1952.
On June 8, 1958, Dick was united in marriage to Dawn Gothe. They lived on the family farm until moving to Montevideo in 1969. He farmed the Goulson family farm until 1988 when his sons took over the farming operation. In addition to farming, Dick’s main occupation was a bricklayer, working with several local contractors. He set a high working standard and was especially proud of his bricklaying and cornerstone placement work on Hope Reformed Church in Montevideo. Prior to his retirement, Dick was employed by the City of Montevideo. Initially he was sexton at Sunset Memorial Cemetery. (A job he took very seriously, especially when dealing with grieving families in selecting cemetery property for their loved ones.) He eventually was shifted to the water and parks departments. His official retirement took place in 2005.
Dick enjoyed spending time with his family and friends. He had a gift for visiting and conversation. He enjoyed playing cards, square dancing, bowling and taking on remodeling projects for family and friends. He and Dawn shared wonderful times traveling to Hawaii, Norway and other U.S. destinations. He also shared many memorable trips with his grandsons, Adam and Andrew to Canada, the Black Hills, Wisconsin Dells and Niagara Falls. He also visited his nephew Jason French in Atlanta during the summer Olympics and Mackinac Island. He was always proud of his Milan/Mandt roots and the church bell at Mandt Cemetery will ring him home.
Following a courageous three year battle with cancer, Dick was called from this life on Thursday May 1, 2014, at Rice Memorial Hospital in Willmar. He was 79 years of age.
He is survived by his wife Dawn of Montevideo; his sons Gregg (& Joann) Goulson and Todd (& Linda Gordon) Goulson all of Montevideo; grandchildren Drs. Adam (& Kayla) Goulson of Cannon Falls, Andrew Goulson (& Siri Strand) of Watertown, Terry (& Joy) Negen of Marshall and Holly Olson of Montevideo; 6 great-grandchildren; sisters Mary Ann (& Lawrence) Larson of Benson, and Constance (Ron) Hanson of Willmar; brother Dr. Hilton Goulson of Chapel Hill, NC; sisters-in-law MaryNell (& Gregg) French and Diane (& John) Skonard, all of Montevideo; as well as several nieces, nephews and extended family.
He was preceded in death by his parents Thomas & Mathilda Goulson and his mother and father-in-law Casey and Myrlee Gothe.
