Phyllis Adell (Sandberg) Rude passed away, bravely, on July 10, 2017. Phyllis was born in Granite Falls, on April 29, 1927. She is preceded in death by her husband, Jerry, her infant daughter, Mary Susan, her parents, Bennett and Helma (Hilden) Sandberg, her sister, Margaret, and her brother, Bruce. She is survived by her children, Connie, Owen Gregory (Connie D), Bradley (Marie), her niece, Lynn, and her friend, Cheryl. She is also survived by six grandchildren: Kristina (Paul) Sickman, Benjamin (Sarah) Johnson, Cassandra Smith (Jessie David), Julie Rude, Sarah Rude (Niles Haich), and Thomas Rude, and six great-grandchildren: Nicole, Blake, Sullivan, Lauren, Dylan, and Delaney.
Phyllis married Owen V. J. (Jerry) Rude in Granite Falls on May 31, 1947. Phyllis contracted polio on October 31, 1952, and was thereafter confined to a wheelchair. In 1959 Phyllis and Jerry built an accessible home, and Phyllis was able to get in and out, as she pleased. She also purchased a car with hand controls, so her movements in the community suffered few impediments.
Phyllis was an accomplished seamstress, quilter and knitter, and a marvel in the kitchen. She was a formidable opponent on the Scrabble board. Phyllis loved being outdoors, fishing, and gardening. Her birdfeeders and the birds, were a constant joy; she particularly delighted in the migratory arrivals each spring.
We will miss her sharp intelligence, her robust sense of humor, and her stories. Rest in peace, dear one.
