Phyllis was born June 23rd, 1928 to Walter and Emma (Anderson) Swenson in Dawson, Minnesota. She was baptized and confirmed at Riverside Lutheran Church of Dawson. She graduated from Dawson High School in 1946 and went on to graduate with a Liberal Arts degree from Clifton Lutheran College in 1948. She also received a Bachelor of Science degree from Mankato State. Phyl taught grade school in the Yellow Medicine County and Clarkfield School Districts until her retirement in 1987. She served on many educational boards throughout the years, including the MN Educational Association and the MN Board of Teaching, giving countless hours to improving our educational system.
Phyl was married to Wilford Fredlund on June 28, 1948. They created many happy memories on the Fredlund family farm near Canby until they parted in 1979. She then moved to Granite Falls and became an active member of her new community.
Phyl was initiated in to the Alpha Chi Chapter of Delta Kappa Gamma in 1981. The Delta Kappa Gamma Society promotes professional and personal growth of women educators and excellence in education. Phyl was an officer within the organization for 19 years including two years as State President. She enjoyed attending all the conventions throughout the country with her chapter sisters.
Phyl loved to travel and her many trips included an Alaskan Cruise, touring Australia, New Zealand and the Galapagos Islands; always believing you should never stop learning and always enjoy God’s creation and His many wondrous gifts.
Throughout her life, Phyl treasured her faith in Jesus Christ. She was an active member and service to her church was a priority. She did everything from leading the children’s choir and teaching Sunday school to being a Deacon on the board, a delegate to synod conventions and a Stephen Ministry Leader. Her service continued in to her community where she was a member of the Granite Falls Park Board, Granite Falls Peer Counseling and drove others in need many miles to appointments. A truly giving heart.
Phyl loved to golf and gleaned many trophies for her prowess on the course. She also enjoyed fishing, hiking, bowling and photography. She had an eye for a good shot and we have all enjoyed her wonderful pictures and photography presentations over the years, including the inspirational “Infinite Grandeur: Prairie, Hill and Vale”.
In 2007 Phyl was diagnosed with Parkinson’s disease. She fought the battle well; always looking to improve her situation with exercises and walking. April 2013 brought a life change when she fell at her home in Granite Falls. Once recovered she decided to sell her home and move to an assisted living facility, The Rivers, in Burnsville, Minnesota. Always the trooper, she made The Rivers her new home and its residents her new friends.
Phyl passed away on August 27, 2015, in Burnsville, Minnesota. She is preceded in death by her parents Walter and Emma, her sister Verlyce Borlaug, brother-in-law Roland Robertson, and sister-in-law Victoria Swenson.
