Pearl Hempel, 91, of Granite Falls, Minnesota passed away on Tuesday, November 23, 2021, at Granite Falls Care Center in Granite Falls. Funeral Services will be held Saturday, November 27, 2021, at 11:00 AM at St. Paul’s Lutheran Church in Granite Falls with interment at the church cemetery. Visitation will be held one hour prior to the service at the church.
Pearl Elizabeth Schmidt was born on February 15, 1930, on the Schmidt homestead near Wood Lake, Minnesota to Richard and Bertha (Kruse) Schmidt. She was baptized on March 16, 1930, and later confirmed both at St. John’s Lutheran Church in Wood Lake, Minnesota. She first went to school in Wood Lake and later attended high school in Granite Falls graduating in 1948.
Pearl was united in marriage to Raymond Hempel on January 30, 1949, at St. John’s Lutheran Church in Wood Lake. The couple made their home in Granite Falls and were blessed with five children, Terry, Lynette, Bradley, RaeAnn and Nanci Jo. Pearl was a dedicated wife and mom. When she wasn’t taking care of things in the office for Ray’s construction business, Hempel Brothers, she was working tirelessly at home.
Pearl was a member of St. Paul’s Lutheran Church and enjoyed helping in the Women’s Guild there. She was a member of the Granite Falls VFW Auxiliary and also the D.A.V. Auxiliary. Pearl enjoyed being a part of the local Homemaker’s Group. She enjoyed camping, playing cards and researching her family’s genealogy. Her focus, by far, was her family. Pearl loved spending time with each, from her dear children, grandchildren, all the way to her youngest great grandchild.
Pearl is survived by her children, Terry (Rosemary) Hempel of Granite Falls, Lynette (significant other, Tom Sykora) Sundquist of Sauk Rapids, Brad (Holly) Hempel of Granite Falls, RaeAnn (Rolland) Hegna of Granite Falls, Nanci Jo (Mark) Zenner of Savage; grandchildren, Kim (Joe) Koepke, Cameron (Jill) Hempel, Bridget (Corey) Applegate, Erica (Dustin) Dusha, Adam (significant other, Jamie) Sundquist, Jesse (Alicia) Hempel, Ali (Brandon) Mensink, Nik (Lacey) Hempel, Dylan (Gretchen) Hempel, Jordan (Megan) Hegna, Mason Hegna, Brent Hegna, Lawson (special friend, Tarah Stegemann) Zenner, McKenzie Zenner; 22 great grandchildren; brother-in-law, Donald (Shirley) Hempel of Granite Falls; as well as nieces, nephews, other relatives and friends.
Pearl was preceded in death by her parents, Richard & Bertha Schmidt; husband, Ray; son-in-law, Jeff Sundquist; brothers, William Schmidt, Awaldt Schmidt, Art Schmidt; sisters, Lorena Buchholz, Lydia Kirschbaum, Ida Kirschbaum, Ella Timm, Mae Mitchell and infant Hulda Schmidt.
