Michael “Mike” Thissen, age 86, of Clara City, passed away Monday, January 30, 2023 at the Rice Hospital in Willmar, Minnesota. A Mass of Christian Burial will be Tuesday, February 7, 2023 at 11:00 AM at St. Clara Catholic Church. Knights of Columbus will pray the Rosary at 10:30 AM. Interment following in the church cemetery. Visitation will be held Tuesday from 10:00 – 11:00 AM, one hour prior to the service at the church
Michael Paul Thissen was born on January 4, 1937, the son of Matthew and Veronica (Jostes) Berres in Lakeville, Minnesota. When Mike and his brothers, Joe and George, were four, six, and eight years old, they were taken in and raised by Anna Thissen. Mike and Joe took Anna’s name, and she raised and loved the three boys like her own. They lived on her farm in Lone Tree Township north of Clara City.
Mike attended St. Clara’s Catholic School, and in 1966 he began farming on the home farm where he was raised. Mike also drove to Montevideo and worked as a dishwasher at the Hunt Hotel for three years. In 1988 they sold the cows, and in a few years, they moved into Clara City.
Mike worked at Impact Plastics for nine years, and washed dishes at Donner’s for six years until an on-the-job injury forced him to retire. Mike loved visiting with friends, and he enjoyed gardening and fishing.
Mike is survived by his brothers, Joeseph Thissen and Leroy Berres; sister, Marcella Wessinger; as well as many nieces and nephews.
Mike is preceded in death by his parents, Matthew and Veronica Berres; adopted mother, Anna Thissen; brothers, Charles Berres, George Berres, Luverne Berres; and sister, Cecilia Berres.
