Merlin Eugene Gustafson was born July 22, 1928 at the hospital in Montevideo, Minnesota. He passed away peacefully Tuesday, April 12, 2016 at the Minneapolis VA Medical Center. He was the son of Melvin and Emma Gustafson. He spent the early years of life in Granite Falls and later moved to Hanley Falls. Merlin was baptized and confirmed in the Lutheran faith at the Yellow Medicine Lutheran Church. He was a graduate of the Hanley Falls High School. He attended the Agricultural Campus, University of Minnesota-St. Paul and later enlisted in the United States Navy serving 4 years during the Korean War. After his service to our country he returned to the farm where he farmed with his Dad.
Merlin and Corrine were united in marriage on March 24, 1962 at Our Saviors Lutheran Church in Montevideo, Minnesota. They settled on the family farm near Hanley Falls, where he was active in the American Legion Post 127, VFW, Masonic Lodge for over 65 years and a Shriner. He was active in the Sons of Norway and Good Sam Campers. Merlin was the director of the Hanley Falls Lumber Yard. He was also active on the church council and a member of the Hanley Falls Farmers Co-Op Elevator. Merlin loved and supported his family above all else. He was always up for a good game of pinochle, board games and visiting with family and friends. Merlin was very talented in many ways and had a heart of gold.
He is survived by his wife Corrine and children Terri Puffe (Scott) of Moorhead, Minnesota, Mark Gustafson (Kathy) of Chantilly, Virginia, Ron Gustafson (Heidi) of Loretto, Minnesota; his grandchildren Kelsey Brovick (Bret), Alex Gustafson, Emma and Megan Gustafson and one great grandchild Annika Brovick. Merlin’s sister Joan Wuthrich (Jim), their two sons David Wuthrich (Tara) and Paul Wuthrich (Cristi) and great nephews Luke & Adam Wuthrich.
Merlin was preceded in death by his parents Melvin and Emma Gustafson.
