A Celebration of Life will be held on Saturday, February 4th from 2:00 to 4:00 pm at the Wing-Bain Funeral Home.

Mel J. Peterson, age 27, passed away from lung failure on January 24, 2023, at home surrounded by loved ones. Mel was born on September 8, 1995, in Sioux Falls, South Dakota, to Issac William and Angela Eileen Peterson. Mel attended primary school in Montevideo, Minnesota (K-1st grades); Shady Cove, Oregon (1st-3rd grades); Sutherlin, Oregon (4th – 8th grades); and back to Montevideo, Minnesota (8th – 12th grades), where Mel graduated from high school.

After graduating, Mel attended Granite Falls Community College where a CNA license was achieved. Mel worked at the Granite Falls nursing home before going on to further schooling where Mel attended Dunwoody College of Technology earning an associate degree in Engineering Drafting and Design in May 2019. Mel worked for several different companies with this degree in the Minneapolis/St. Paul area until COVID terminated these positions, at which time Mel moved to Iowa and worked for a company in Omaha, Nebraska, and helped to care for a 100-year-old great-grandmother at the end of her life. The mountains continued to call Mel, and so moving to Colorado seemed like the next best thing. While in Colorado, Mel worked at Origin Red Rocks, a hotel, where being social and meeting people and touching lives continued. In January 2022, increasing health issues called Mel back to mainly living in Minnesota, and eventually living full time in Montevideo, with family. At this point, Mel fell in love with tiling and continued in the workforce as a tiler with a tiling business before being diagnosed with chronic lung failure, causing this business to end.

In May 2013, Mel became very sick and not able to breathe. After several weeks of being in the ICU, depletion of both lungs had transpired. On July 4, 2013, Mel underwent a very successful bilateral lung transplant at the age of 17, which extended life for an additional nine and a half years. Thank you, donor and family, for this extra time. On August 28, 2022, Mel was told there would be only six months left to live or another transplant would have to be performed as the lungs were failing. On September 8, 2022, the news was given that a second lung transplant was not an option.

Mel is remembered for the genuine love and care of others; both for people and animals. Mel did not care who you were, how much money you had, where you came from or what your title was; kindness and love poured out of Mel to you. We all have been touched by the heart that is within Mel.

Mel had an extreme love for The Lord and had a strong faith and desired to be baptized. Baptism took place on Saturday, January 21, 2023. This faith and love for The Lord carried Mel through to eternity with The Lord forever.

Mel is survived by both parents; Addelyn Peterson (best baby sister ever) of Montevideo, MN; Melody Winter (grandma) of Montevideo, MN; Garry and Donna Pellett (grandpa and grandma) of Atlantic, IA; Debra Langley (grandma) of Florida; Ryan and Susan Pellett (Uncle and Aunt) of Omaha, NE; Aaron and Dawn Pellett (Uncle and Aunt) of Alborn, MN; Alan and Lori Richardson (Uncle and Aunt) of Bella Vista, AR; Nathan and Alice Boehm (Uncle and Aunt) of Warner Robins, GA; Eric and Amber Hedrick (Uncle and Aunt) of Sioux Falls, SD; Hazel Sig-Hester (100-year old great great aunt) of Grinnell, IA; Bill F.
