Mathilda Rhode was born January 18, 1917 to Albert and Anna (Kramer) Rhode in Clara City, MN. She was the youngest of four children. Growing up on a farm in the Clara City area. Mathilda went to school through eighth grade at the St. Clara Catholic School.
Soon after finishing her schooling, her father retired from farming and the family moved to New Ulm. It was a change for Mathilda and her family because instead of living in the country they now lived in town. Mathilda attended one year of high school in Waseca and then went to work at St. Mary’s hospital in Rochester, MN in the housekeeping department. She worked there for one year and then had to return to New Ulm to help care for her parents. Mathilda was an active member of the New Ulm Cathedral Catholic Church. She helped serve many funeral dinners there. While living in New Ulm she was employed at Loretto Hospital in the housekeeping department where she worked for 34 years retiring in 1979.
In 2000 Mathilda moved back to Clara City to be closer to family and lived independently at Prairie Park Place until 2020 when she became a resident of the Clara City Care Center. Mathilda walked many miles in her life having never learned how to drive. She walked all over New Ulm, and Clara City to go to church and get her groceries. She also walked the halls of Prairie Park Place and the Clara City Care Center up until a week before she passed.
Mathilda went to her eternal home on Monday, December 6, 2021 at the age of 104 years. She is survived by many nephews and nieces, great nephews and nieces and great, great nephews and nieces. She was preceded in death by her parents, her sisters, Sr. Annella Rhode, Cecilia and husband Ted Speiser, and her brother Leo and wife Katheryn Rhode, her nephew John Speiser, and nieces Joyce and Linda Rhode.
