Mary Ellen Beltz was born on May 27, 1944, the daughter of L.R. “Tiny” and Lucille (Marble) Beltz. She was baptized and confirmed at St. Joseph Catholic Church in Montevideo and graduated with the Montevideo Class of 1962. Mary worked for several years in Helena, Montana and Las Vegas, Nevada before returning to Montevideo. She always liked a challenge. So with a limited knowledge of the food and beverage business, Mary purchased Deb’s Supper Club in 1978, turning it into a very popular eating place. Hunters from the Twin Cities came out every year and loved her potatoes with the funny name. At Valentino’s, they were known as “Mary Beltz’s Famous Hash Browns”. After selling Deb’s in the early 1990’s, she went on to manage the American Legion Club. Having had enough of an adventure in the food and beverage business, Mary went to work at County Market for several years until she decided to semi-retire. She then went to work for Deb Grussing at one of her group homes where she enjoyed working with her special clients until her cancer forced her to quit. Mary loved watching all sports and played slow pitch softball and bowled for many years. She was a very independent and strong minded person with a big heart and a giving nature and a straight forward opinion which sometimes you didn’t even have to ask for. She leaves behind many, many friends whom she loved dearly and would always try to be there for them. She was one of a kind and will be missed by many. Mary had a secret tho. When it came to Lucy and Cleo, affectionately known as “The Girls”, she was a marshmallow. They were in charge and made sure she knew it. They were the loves of her life and knew “Mary’s bark was worse than her bite”. Mary passed away at the St. Cloud Hospital on Friday, December 2nd. She was 72 years of age. She is survived by two brothers: Billy (Anita) Beltz of Alameda, CA and Robert Beltz of St. Cloud; one sister: Ginny Ryer of Montevideo; several nieces, nephews, cousins, and her beloved dog, Cleo. She was preceded in death by her parents, her sister Lucille, brother John, niece Sheryl and her beloved dog Lucy.
