Marvin Louis Koenen was born April 15, 1932 in Chippewa County, the son of Harm and Kate (Fletcher) Koenen. He passed away January 2, 2015 at the Chippewa County-Montevideo Hospital.
He was baptized and confirmed in the Lutheran faith at Immanuel Lutheran Church in Clara City. Marvin grew up and attended country school in Clara City and farmed with his family. He proudly served his country in the United States Army from 1952 and was stationed in Germany before receiving his honorable discharge in 1954. He continued to serve in the reserves until August 31, 1960.
On June 26, 1955 he was united in marriage to Luella Jeseritz in Wood Lake. To this union, two children were born. They returned to the Koenen family homestead where Marvin was a grain and livestock farmer. Luella passed away on February 15, 1985 and Marvin remained on their farm until his retirement in 1987.
He was active in the Clara City American Legion, a member of Immanuel Lutheran Church and enjoyed visiting with people and taking motorcycle rides with Luella, and especially enjoyed spending time with his grandchildren and great grandchildren.
On December 25, 1987, Marvin was united in marriage to Doris (Erickson) Risa, and made their home in Clarkfield. Marvin became active in the Clarkfield Lutheran Church and was a member of the Hazel Run American Legion. In his retirement years with Doris, he enjoyed flower gardening, took up golf and was very involved with the Lions Club.
Marvin is survived by his wife Doris Koenen of Clarkfield; children: Judy (Bill) Stenberg of Fosston; Larry Koenen of St. Paul; grandchildren: Jessica (Toby) Strom of McIntosh; Ashley (Matt) Schow of McIntosh; Reise (Katie Ahmann) Stenberg of Argusville, North Dakota; great-grandchildren: Luella Strom, Mya Strom, Kolten Schow, Liam Schow; Doris’s children: Dean (Becky) Risa of Montevideo; Kristine (Anthony) Kurley of Pittsburgh, Pennsylvania; Michael (Deb) Risa of Clarkfield; Arvid Risa of Clarkfield; Annette (Terry) Viessmann of Grenville, South Dakota; Doris’s grandchildren; siblings: Laura (Walter) Lottman of Kerkhoven; Helen Holten of Arizona; and Pearl Janssen.
He was preceded in death by his parents Harm and Kate Koenen, his wife: Luella Koenen; and several siblings.
