Martha Schwitters was born on January 27, 1912 to Albert and Hielke (Dannen) Becker in Stoneham Township near Clara City, Minnesota. She was baptized on April 14, 1912 at the Bethany Reformed Church and confirmed in the Lutheran faith on June 30, 1934 at the Immanuel Lutheran Church. Martha attended school at rural school district 37 and graduated from the 8th grade. She was united in marriage to Harry Schwitters on January 31, 1934. They farmed in the Clara City area until retirement in 1968. She also was a cook at the Clara City nursing home for several years. Martha was an active member of Immanuel Lutheran Church in Clara City. She particularly enjoyed quilting and crocheting and received awards for her quilts at the county fair. She was also an active member of a homemakers club for many years. Her death occurred on January 29, 2008 at the Clara City Community Care Center at the age of 96 years and 2 days. Martha is survived by two sons; Arlen Schwitters of Fort Myers, Florida, Roland (and Janice) of Cottage Grove, Minnesota and son-in-law Owen Larson of Sacred Heart, Minnesota, two grandsons; Kevin (and Sandra) Schwitters of Cannon Falls, Minnesota, Ryan Schwitters of Oakdale, Minnesota, five granddaughters; Dianne (and Allen) Poucher Jr. of Jacksonville, Florida, Sandra (and Chuck) Roelofs of Willmar, Minnesota, Jean (and Craig) Detwiler of Rochester, New York, Angela (and John) Monson of Dassel, Minnesota and Jennifer (and Paul) Kalla of Brooklyn Park, Minnesota. She is also survived by three sisters; Jeanette Herrmann of Glencoe, Minnesota, Emma Peglow of Peterboroug, New Hampshire, Cora Heller of Port Charlotte, Florida, three brothers; Herman (and Rosella) Becker of Montevideo, Minnesota, George (and Marion) Becker of Clara City, Minnesota, and Vernon Becker of Clara City, Minnesota, ten great grandchildren and several nieces and nephews. Martha was preceded in death by her parents, her husband, a son Donald, a daughter Doris Larson, brother Fred Becker and two infant brothers. Martha will be remembered for her strong faith, her many abilities as a farmer's wife, and her many visits with countless friends and neighbors. She will be missed by her family and friends.
