Mae Degrote

Mae ‘Clara Mae’ DeGrote was born on March 30, 1921, in Norman County near Halstad, MN, the daughter of Albert O. and Marie (Stennes) Gilbertson. She was baptized in Marsh River Lutheran Church on May 1, 1921 and confirmed in the Lutheran faith on Nov. 11, 1934, in the same church.
Mae attended and graduated from high school in Halstad, MN in 1939 and continued her education at the University of North Dakota, graduating in 1943. She was united in marriage to Simon DeGrote on April 3, 1953 in Halstad, MN. She assisted her husband in operating DeGrote Funeral Home of Clara City, MN and was also a teacher and dietician.
Mae was a kind, caring and giving person. She enjoyed spending time with her children, grandchildren, great grandchildren and her many friends. She also opened her heart to the less fortunate and those who were lonely. Her compassion for people became a trademark for Mae.
Mae was a faithful member of Immanuel Lutheran Church in Clara City and was active in Ladies Aide, the Pricilla Club and enjoyed quilting. In 2010 she moved into Prairie Park Place and following a brief illness, Mae was called from this life on Tuesday, Oct. 20, 2015, at the Clara City Care Center. She was 94 years of age.
Surviving family include her daughters- Jill (& Bob) Marcus and Jan (& Dwight) Mulder; grandchildren- Angela (&Ryan) Bickett, Allison (& Justin) Kelley, Barry (& Jessica) Mulder, Alex (& Laura) Mulder, Ryan Marcus (& special friend Lauren Lippert); great grandchildren- Adelynn & Bowen Kelley, Caden Bickett, Mason Mulder and Addison & Liliana Mulder; many friends and extended family.
She was preceded in death by her parents; her husband; a sister- LaVerne Karpenko; and her step-mother Selma Gilbertson.
