Mabel Sophia Hegna Johnson was born March 5, 1919, on the home farm in Hawk Creek Township, the daughter of Martin & Ingeborg (Holmgren) Hegna. She attended school at District 6 & District 42 and graduated from Granite Falls High School in 1937. She was united in marriage to Raymond Stanford Johnson on June 18, 1939, at Hawk Creek Lutheran Church. Together they traveled as Ray sold The Farmer. In 1943, they purchased a farm in Sacred Heart where they lived until 1976. They built a new house on the farm and lived there until 1999, when they moved back to Granite Falls. This union was blessed with two children: Linda and Michael. Mabel was a lifelong member of Hawk Creek Lutheran Church, active in the Ladies Aid, Circle, choir and taught Sunday School. She enjoyed writing letters, embroidery and visiting with elderly relatives. She did volunteer work for others and provided lunches and dinners for their customers at Johnson Seed Farm. Mabel and Ray loved to travel on bus tours to all parts of the United States. They also flew to Sweden and Norway to tour and visit relatives two times and also traveled to Hawaii. They were married 62 years. Ray passed away in October of 2001. Mabel passed away on Thursday, December 19, 2013, at the Granite Falls Hospital. She was 94 years of age. She is survived by her children: Linda (Howard) Dahlager of Maynard and Michael (Elaine) Johnson of Sacred Heart; 6 grandchildren: Eric (Angela), Nathan (Cori), Alyssa (Todd), Justin (Deedra), Joseph (Anna) & Amber; 10 great grandchildren: Grace, Jordan, Faith, Meeghen, Cody, Brady, Ty, Tate, Kale and Miliana; sister-in-law Lois Hegna of Granite Falls; brother-in-law John Arlen Johnson of Sacred Heart and numerous nieces, nephews and extended family and friends. She was preceded in death by her parents, siblings: Marion, Ellen, William, Florence, Katy, Jerome and Hazel; and her husband Ray in 2001.
