LuVerne Eugene Hansen was born on June 15, 1931 in Granite Falls, MN, the son of James A. and Wanda T. (Grabski) Hansen. He was baptized and confirmed in the Catholic faith and attended public school in Granite Falls.
As a teenager, LuVerne played hockey and football and worked as an usher at the Avalon Theater. After graduating from Granite Falls High School in 1949, LuVerne attended the College of St. Thomas in St. Paul, MN. When the Korean conflict heated up, LuVerne joined the Navy, where he served as a radio operator on the USS Wahoo submarine.
While stationed at the Treasure Island Naval Shipyard, LuVerne went to a dance and met a pretty young nursing student – Marguerite Bletz. LuVerne and Marguerite were united in marriage on July 11, 1953. The young couple enjoyed making new friends when LuVerne was deployed to Pearl Harbor, HI and Bremerton, WA. At the completion of LuVerne’s Navy service, he and Marguerite moved to Minnesota, eventually returning to Granite Falls.
In the 1950s and 60s, LuVerne worked with his father and brother in the Hansen Construction Co. He was proud to recount that his first construction assignment was to build a new popcorn stand for Prentice St. Later, LuVerne managed the Crown Dining Centre restaurant and sold life insurance for New York Life.
LuVerne was active in local government, serving on the Granite Falls city council and running for mayor. In his spare time, LuVerne loved flying his Beechcraft Bonanza, playing dice with friends, telling stories, watching football, and clearing snow with his tractor. He also loved celebrating the adventures and achievements of his 12 children and 15 grandchildren.
After a long battle with cancer, LuVerne passed away peacefully on Monday, November 28, 2016 at the Granite Falls Hospital. Surviving family include his wife, Marguerite Hansen of Granite Falls; daughters Jackie Eggers (Bill) of Montevideo, MN, Jocelyn Hansen of Reno, NV, Jody Anderson of Eau Claire, WI; and sons Steven Hansen (Margaret) of Parkland, FL; David Hansen (Kathy) of Eagan, MN; Kevin Hansen (Susan) of Bellingham, WA; James Hansen (Jennifer) of Sunnyvale, CA; John Hansen (Alma) of San Jose, CA; Thomas Hansen (Susan) of Dunwoody, GA; Jeffrey Hansen (Sally) of Los Gatos, CA; Michael Hansen (Paulette) of Fort Collins, CO; and Richard Hansen (Heather) of Salt Lake City, UT.
