LeRoy Melvin Olson was born on February 10, 1937 in West Bank Township, Minnesota. He was the son of Melvin and Verna (Eliason) Olson. He grew up with his sister, Margene, near Big Bend attending school in Milan, Minnesota. LeRoy was baptized and confirmed at the Big Bend Lutheran Church.
On June 22, 1957, LeRoy was united in marriage to the love of his life, Jocile Johnson, at United Methodist Church in Montevideo. The couple began their life together in Big Bend, and eventually moved to Montevideo. Together they were blessed with three daughters, Pamela, Lisa and Teresa.
LeRoy worked at the Farmer’s Union Coop in his early years. Later he and Jocile owned and operated the Dairy Queen in Montevideo. Eventually he was employed at Prairie Five Community Action until his retirement.
LeRoy enjoyed hunting and fishing. He was known to outlast most when spending a day on the lake fishing always saying, “let’s make one more pass”. The only thing he loved more than fishing was his family and he wasn’t afraid to show it with hugs on every occasion. LeRoy always had time (and hugs) for Jocile, his daughters, his grandchildren and the great grandchildren. He was a man of few words but would go the extra mile for anyone anytime.
LeRoy’s hobbies included fishing and deer hunting. The red Ford truck and the Lund boat travelled to Lac Qui Parle Lake and the Eliason homestead and hunting land countless times over the years.
LeRoy bragged about Jocile’s cooking and loved her desserts and especially her chocolate chip cookies! Some other favorites: Jocile’s potato salad, steak and baked potatoes, Werther caramels, Rolos and a McMasters cocktail.
LeRoy loved music and seemed to know every word of Alan Jackson’s Precious Memories Collection. He loved to sing, and he loved to dance with Johnny Cash being one of his favorite country western artists.
