LeRoy Henry Koenen was born in Stoneham Township, rural Chippewa County, Montevideo, MN on Wednesday, July 4, 1928. He died at the Chippewa County Montevideo Hospital on Tuesday, March 28, 2017 at the age of 88. It was LeRoy’s longtime wish to help others. His body has been donated to the University of Minnesota Anatomy Bequest Program for research.
LeRoy attended high school in Montevideo where he was on the football, basketball and track teams. He enlisted in the U. S. Army on August 29, 1946 and faithfully served his country during World War II, including overseas duty. He was honorably discharged in December 1947.
LeRoy has been a member of Our Saviors Lutheran Church in Montevideo for over 50 years. He was baptized and confirmed there, and on April 11, 1954, married Virginia Hutchens at the same altar. Their union was blessed with three children.
LeRoy owned and operated LeRoy’s Heating Service for twenty five years. He was a member of the Montevideo Fire & Rescue for thirteen years and a lifetime member of the V.F.W., for which he served as Commander from 1969-1970.
He enjoyed fishing, hunting, spending time at the lake, and the trips he and Ginny took, particularly their trip to Germany. His greatest joy was the time they spent with the kids, grandkids and great grandkids.
Cherishing LeRoy’s memory are his wife Ginny, his children: Kim (Robert) Molden, Loren Koenen, and Janell (Patrick) Haugen; grandchildren: Chris (Jessie) Lia, Cheryl (Ryan) Erp, Crystal (Craig) Steffen, Ashley (Curt) Gibbs, Adam (Leslie) Zaske; and 8 great grandchildren.
He was preceded in death by his parents Henry and Martha Koenen, his son-in-law Mark Lia, father and mother-in-law Russell and Emma Hutchens, father-in-law Ernie Doose, and sisters: Lillian Borg, Bernice Boike, Shirley Rikke, and Norma Anderson.
