Leona Winslow

March 5, 1922 — November 6, 2008

Leona Schutz Winslow died at the Luther Haven Nursing Home in the early morning hours of Thursday, November 6th, 2008. She was born on Sunday, March 5, 1922 to Christ and Mathilda Kirschenmann. She was baptized Leona Katherina and raised and educated near Eureka, South Dakota. She and Albert Schutz were married on April 5, 1942 in Eureka and their union was blessed with five sons. The family moved to Montevideo where Albert was employed as a butter maker with the Swift plant. In addition to raising her family, Leona took in other children during the day to supplement the family income. She was an excellent homemaker and seamstress, renowned for her caramel rolls, bread and buns. She later worked in electronic assembly at Control Data and MTI. After a one-year struggle with cancer, Albert died in August 1981 at the young age of 63. Leona married Frances Winslow in September of 1983. They made their home just west of Montevideo. Even after Francis? death in February of 1985, Leona enjoyed keeping her beautiful lawn and gardens and established a reputation as a Master Gardener. She served as president of the Garden Club, Cub Scout Den Mother when the boys were at home, and an active member in the Ladies Circle of Our Savior's Lutheran Church. Due to failing health, she moved to Luther Haven Nursing Home in September of 2001. She enjoyed many friendships while a resident there and especially loved it when her family took her to their home for holidays and other special occasions. When she could no longer venture out, her devoted family brought her favorite treats and visits to her. Her passing has left a hole in many hearts. Cherishing her memory are her children: John & Barbara Schutz of Winona, Steven & Lilly Schutz of Mankato, Donald & Carol Schutz of Montevideo, Michael & Nadine Schutz of Woodbury, and James & Ann Marie Schutz of Fargo; 12 grandchildren, 12 great grandchildren, 1 great great grandson and her sister Mae Reich of Fergus Falls. Preceding her in death were her parents, her husbands Albert and Francis, her step-father Ed Wolff, her sister Emma Giere and her brother Alvin.
