Leland Foos

November 13, 1933 — September 10, 2010

Leland Dean Foos was born November 13, 1933 in Alpena, South Dakota to Peter and Catherine Foos. Baptized in 1963, he confirmed his faith in the First Lutheran Church of Mitchell, South Dakota. He attended rural schools in South Dakota. Leland served his beloved country in the United States Army/Army National Guard. He entered the Army as an enlistee on January 9, 1952 in Sioux Falls and saw combat as a rifleman with the 15th Infantry Division in Korea for a period of twelve months. His military career spanned 33 years with a couple of brief interruptions. He was a member of the American Legion, Our Savior's Lutheran Church, and a lifetime member of the Veterans of Foreign Wars and Disabled American Veterans. Leland married Barbara Staley in 1953 and six children were born to this union. On May 31, 1980, Edith "Edie" Sickels Doebbert became his bride and they remained devoted to one another until her death in 2004.Lee loved traveling the United States. He had just left Montevideo on Friday on a new adventure to Washington, D.C. While camping in Howe, Indiana, he died peacefully in his sleep. He was 76 years old.Left to cherish his memory are his children: Daniel Foos of Medford, OR; Cinthia Foos and Robert Foos of Tulsa, OK; Connie Docken and Laura Duvall both of Montevideo, Samuel Foos of Milwaukee, WI; and Connie Krugerud of California; his brother Ronald Foos of Sioux Falls; and his sisters Shirley Magnuson of Mitchell and Linda Conn of Madison, South Dakota.Preceding him in death were his parents, his wife Edie, his grandson Calvin Foos, his brother Larry, his sister Neva and the mother of his children: Barbara Staley.
