Laurene Hayes Halverson was born in Montevideo, Minnesota on April 1, 1915 to Winfield and Gertrude (Flaten) Hayes. She attended school in Montevideo and continued her education in the Minnesota School of Business. She worked for Northern States Power Company in Montevideo prior to her marriage to Ward Halverson While Ward pursued a career as railroad engineer with the Milwaukee Railroad, they raised their three children in the Montevideo area. Ward and Laurene retired to McAllen, Texas for seven years and later moved to Alamo, Texas. Ward died on July 6th, 1994 while a resident of the McAllen Nursing Home. Laurene remained active in many social activities including golf and bridge. She was active in Eastern Star as a past Worthy Matron and lifetime member. She was instrumental in the organization of a Job's Daughter Chapter in Montevideo. An active member of the Methodist Church in Montevideo, she later transferred her membership to the Donna Methodist Church in South Texas. Her leisure travels included many of the United States as well as abroad in Europe and the Middle East. Laurene died in Plano, Texas on Monday, September 15th at the age of 93 years. Cherishing her memory are her children: Susan Grifno of Plano, Texas, David & Kay Halverson of Centennial, Colorado and Lynn & David Anderson of Lake Oswego, Oregon; 6 grandchildren: Paul Kispert of Dallas, Texas, Peter and Diana Kispert of McKinney, Texas, Mark Grifno of Lewisville, Texas, Megan and Bill Hummel of Seattle, Washington, Heather, and Nick Anderson of Seattle, Washington; 7 great grandchildren: Mackenzie, Josilyn and Quintin Kispert of McKinney, Carmin and Carmac Hummel of Seattle, Capriana and Hayden Wilhelmi of Centennial; sisters-in-law: Margaret Wittmayer of Portland, Oregon, Barbara Halverson of Seattle, Washington; brother-in-law Robert Borgos of California, and extended relatives including Carolyn Borgos, Vie and George Himley, and Rose Himley. She was preceded in death by her husband Ward in 1994, her sister Mary Helen Hayes Douglas, son-in-law John Grifno, granddaughter Mollie Grifno, and nephew Peter Borgos.
