Kay Marlene Rhode was born June 4, 1940, the daughter of Clarence and Hazel (Stevens) Rosen in Montevideo, Minnesota. She was baptized June 23, 1940 in Montevideo and confirmed in her faith May 22, 1955 at Salem Lutheran Church in Montevideo. She received her education through the eighth grade in Montevideo. After completing the eighth grade, she left school to get a job in order to help support her family.
On November 13, 1959, Kay was united in marriage to Dennis Rhode in South Dakota. The couple made their home on the Rhode family farm for a few years. They moved around to various communities in southwestern Minnesota before returning to Montevideo in 1974 where they raised their family. Together they were blessed with five children, Kim, Karen, Kevin, Ken, and Kurt.
Kay stayed home with her children and loved being a farm wife. When her children were older, one of Kay’s first jobs out of the house was at Dairy Queen. After that she began working at Luther Haven Nursing Home, helping with both the laundry and cooking for over 25 years. She also worked briefly at Coborn’s and substituted at the Montevideo schools in the kitchens. Kay was a member at the Church of St. Joseph and was a member of the VFW Ladies Auxilliary for a number of years in the late 60’s to early 70’s.
Kay enjoyed baking and loved going camping. She enjoyed watching sports, experiencing both the joy and frustration that came along with NASCAR, the Minnesota Twins, and the Minnesota Vikings. She was a passionate collector of Homco ceramic bear figurines for many years, amassing a collection in the hundreds. Later in life, she developed an interest in jigsaw puzzles. Both Dennis and Kay loved getting their family together. After Dennis passed away, Kay’s new companion came into her life: Buddy, a small black mutt of a dog. Buddy was her dear friend for many years until she moved into Luther Haven and Buddy went to live out the rest of his life on the farm with her grandson, Tim.
Kay is survived by her children, Kim (Lane) Quenemoen of Montevideo, Karen (Randy) Buseman of Alexandria, Kevin (Julie) Rhode of Montevideo, Ken (Deb) Rhode of Montevideo, Kurt Rhode of Montevideo; grandchildren, Tim (Amy), Jennifer (Tim), Matthew, Ashley (Kevin), Scott (Cari), Chad (Ali), Nick (Heather), Brett (Nancy) Jennessa (Leif), Alissa (Cody), Jarrett, Kortney, Zach, Cole (Skylar); great grandchildren, Kelsey, Brady, Bryan, Arianna, Collin, Gabriella, Briella, Braxton, Brooklyn, Bryce, Eric, Ashten, Kingston, Henry, Josephine, and Isabelle; brothers, Wayne (Annette) Rosen of Clara City, Gale (Ardell) Rosen of Raymond; sister, Sharon (Gary) Anderson of Dawson; sisters-in-law, Lee Rosen and Betty Rosen; as well as nieces, nephews, other relatives, and friends.
