Kay Bestland, 82, of Granite Falls, passed away on Friday, February 23, 2024, at the Avera Granite Falls Care Center. A celebration of life gathering will be held on Friday, March 8, 2024 from 4:00 –7:00 pm at Wing-Bain Funeral Home in Granite Falls, with a prayer service at 7pm. Internment will be at Yellow Medicine East Cemetery in Hanley Falls.
Kay Ann (Martin) Bestland was born on August 10, 1941 in Granite Falls, MN, the daughter of Myron and Hazel (Allchin) Martin. She was baptized and confirmed at Yellow Medicine Lutheran Church in Hanley Falls, MN. She attended Hanley Falls Public School where she was active in band, choir and school plays and graduated in 1959.
In her youth, she spent a lot of time in town with her grandmother, Agnes. Following high school graduation, she moved to Minneapolis, MN where she lived and worked for 2 years. On August 5,1961 she married David Bestland and they made their home in Granite Falls, MN.
Kay was a working Mom and worked throughout her life at various jobs including, the Granite Falls Hospital, the Granite Falls Elementary School, detasseling corn in the summers, MN Falls Co-op Elevator, Casey’s and Prairies Edge Casino Resort. She enjoyed tending to her lawn, garden and flowers. She enjoyed harvest season where she would can and freeze the fruits of her labor. She loved cooking and baking for one and all. Doing needlepoint was a nighttime winddown activity and she always had time to play a game of cards.
She liked to volunteer and be with people. The Lions Club was her favorite organization, she was also involved with the Salvation Army and Church events when her children were young. She deeply loved being a Grandma, spending time with her Grandsons was her ultimate joy and she loved giving them fruit. When she became Great Grandma, she was elated to learn baby Kaysen had been named after her.
Surviving Kay are her children, Brenda Bestland of Pittsburgh, PA, Bruce (Jennifer) Bestland of Granite Falls; grandsons Bryant (Emma Overbye) Bestland of Willmar, MN, Shaun and Channing Bestland of Granite Falls; great grandson, Kaysen Bestland of Willmar, MN, brothers Alan (Sue) Martin of Russel, MN and Arlen Martin of Hazel Run, MN; and sister-in-law, Phyllis Carlson of Oakdale, MN, good friend and care giver, Dennis Dandurand and a host of cousins, nieces, nephews and close friends.
She was preceded in death by her parents, her husband, David, an infant son and other relatives & friends.
In lieu of flowers direct any memorial to the Granite Falls Lions Club or the Yellow Medicine Lutheran East Cemetery or simply spread kindness to others.
