John Lester Nuernberg was born on Dec. 23, 1954, in St. Paul, MN, the son of Lester and Margaret (Banks) Nuernberg. He was baptized and confirmed in the Catholic faith and graduated from high school in St. Paul. He served his country in the United States Navy from 1972 to 1975. Upon his honorable discharge from the Navy, he began a career in law enforcement.
He served the community of Montevideo as a policeman for over thirty years, retiring in 2008. He then took a position as co-manager of the Montevideo American Legion Post 59 and faithfully fulfilled his duties there right up to the time of his passing.
John was active in numerous law enforcement activities and events during his career and was especially known for organizing and participating in the Montevideo Law Enforcement Shootout golf tournament. He took his job as Legion co-manager very seriously and was known for his meticulous attention to detail. He could always be counted upon to assist in all legion associated activities.
John loved to fish, golf and was an accomplished cook. He loved his family and friends and would do anything for them. He passed away after suffering a heart attack while snorkeling on vacation in Mexico on Tuesday, March 7, 2017. He was 62 years of age.
Survived by son Matthew (& Lyz) Nuernberg of Minneapolis, daughter Jennifer (& Steven) of Holland, MI; loving companion Catherine Podgursky of Montevideo, brothers Mark & David; sisters Clare, Mary & Elizabeth; step-mother Bettie; nieces, nephews and extended family.
Preceded in death by his parents Lester & Margaret and brother Roger.
