John Ladner

John C. Ladner, 95, of Granite Falls, passed away Wednesday, November 18, 2015, following a brief illness.
John was born on May 6, 1920 in Yankton, SD to Josephine and Alfred Ladner. The family lived in St. Cloud for several years before moving to Granite Falls in 1935 to open Ladners Our Own Hardware store on Prentice Street.
In 1942 John entered the Army. During World War II John was stationed at the Presidio in San Francisco.
On September 18, 1943 John married Irene Lerschin in a ceremony held at the chapel on the grounds of the Presidio. Following the war they returned to Granite Falls.
John was an ever present smiley face on Prentice Street and the Granite Falls community. Growing up he helped his parents in the family hardware store.
In 1970, John and his son, Bob, became owners of Ladners' Our Own Hardware, expanding and growing the store for over 45 years.
John proudly served the Granite Falls community in many ways. He was a 75 year member of St. Andrew's, served as chairman of the Hospital board, was a member of the Granite Falls fire department and was named "Boss of the Year" in 1977. John recently received a commendation for his 70 year membership in the Granite Falls Legion.
John just retired in March of this year, but continued to work occasionally at the store until his death.
For all his accomplishments, John was most proud of family. John is survived by his loving wife of 72 years, Irene; son Robert Ladner (Dolly Dahl) of Duluth; daughters Susan (Steven) London of Plymouth; Joan (Brent) Hughes of Plymouth; daughter-in-law Deb Ladner of Granite Falls; and Diane Ladner of Granite Falls. Grandchildren Thomas (Hilda) Ladner, Anthony (Stephanie) Ladner, Anne (Tim) Lindig, Amanda Ladner, Kelly Krogstad, Peyton (Elizabeth) Hughes, and Alexa Hughes; great grandchildren Julia and Alejandro Ladner, Adam Lindig and Brendan Krogstad; sister Mary Ulm and brother Joseph (Gwen) Ladner.
John was preceded in death by his parents, Josephine and Alfred, infant daughter Jane Marie, and most recently by his beloved son Steven Charles.
