Jay Vern Johnson was born March 30, 1916, to Allen & Edith (Broughton) Johnson in Minnesota Falls Township. He was baptized at the First Congregational Church in Granite Falls. He attended school at District #3 in Minnesota Falls Township.
On March 3, 1943, he was united in marriage to Alma Henkel at St. John’s Lutheran Church in Wood Lake, Minnesota. Following their marriage, they resided at a farm place six miles southeast of Granite Falls.
Jay Vern was a member of St. Paul Lutheran Church and served on the Doncaster Cemetery Board. In addition to farming his entire life, Jay Vern was a seed dealer for Trojan Seed Company for many years and was a member of the Farmers Union.
He enjoyed sharing stories of his past times, farming, and current events with family, friends, and acquaintances. Jay Vern was a hardworking and loving father and grandfather.
On Saturday, June 28, 2014, Jay Vern passed away at Rice Memorial Hospital in Willmar, Minnesota, at the age of 98.
He is survived by his sons: Theodore (Kathy) Johnson of Granite Falls and Therold (Mary) Johnson of Wood Lake; 7 grandchildren: Matthew, Mark (Jackie), Brent (Jodi), Eric (Bridget), Chad (Tessa), Anne (Alex) & Alicia; 3 great grandchildren: Nathan, Braden & Peyton; sister Helen Stueland of Granite Falls; and several extended family and friends.
He was preceded in death by his parents, daughter Charlotte in 1989, son-in-law Allen Woller in 1990; wife Alma in 1996 and three brothers: Ellmond E., Clair F. and Erland M. Johnson.
