James Van Binsbergen, age 85, of Montevideo, Minnesota passed away Saturday, August 21, 2021 at his home.
A Public Visitation will be held Sunday, August 29, 2021 from 5:00-7:00 PM at the Wing-Bain Funeral Home in Montevideo.
A Private Family Funeral Service will be held on Monday with burial following at Sunset Memorial Cemetery in Montevideo.
James Van Binsbergen was born on January 16, 1936 in Sioux Center, Iowa, the son of Everett and Cora Van Binsbergen. Jim grew up first in Iowa and then his family moved to Minnesota where he attended school in both Montevideo and Dawson. He worked alongside his father on the family farm and then joined the United States Navy on December 29, 1953. Jim served his country aboard the U.S.S. Bennington and was honorably discharged on December 20, 1956.
On October 17, 1959, Jim was united in marriage to Phyllis Ketelsen at St. Paul’s Lutheran Church in Montevideo. The couple moved to California in the Spring of 1960. In 1962 when they returned to Montevideo where Jim began working for Duininck’s. He started working on the road crew, then as a mechanic. Jim was a member of the Montevideo VFW Post #380 and of St. Paul’s Lutheran Church.
In 1978, Jim was able to farm fulltime with family, which is what he loved. He loved working the soil and wasn’t afraid of working hard. Jim enjoyed going daily to the VFW to talk farming with his friends. He also enjoyed riding motorcycle, reading the Sunday paper, working jigsaw puzzles and riding the Trailblazer.
Jim is survived by wife, Phyllis Van Binsbergen of Montevideo; Gary (Sherri) Van Binsbergen of Clarkfield, Dean (Sandy) Van Binsbergen of Montevideo, Brent (Carrie) Van Binsbergen of Montevideo; daughter-in-law, Deb (Bob) Nutting of Port Charlotte, FL; grandchildren, Samantha Van Binsbergen, Amber (Jacob Sanow) Ward, Alisha (Brett) Drexler, Cole (Emily Baerenwald) Van Binsbergen, Madison Van Binsbergen, Daniel Nutting, Joseph (Lynae) Nutting; great grandchildren, Braelynn, Alayna, Raegan, Piper; siblings, Irvin (Joan) Van Binsbergen of Montevideo, Lois (John) Vanden Brink of Montevideo, Gene (Linda) Van Binsbergen of Montevideo; brother-in-law, Marlin Narragon of St. Helens, OR; as well as nieces, nephews, other relatives and friends.
Jim was preceded in death by his parents, Everett and Cora Van Binsbergen; son, Donald Van Binsbergen; sister, Carol Narragon.
