James N. Hayes was born on Sept. 14, 1919, in Cambridge, WI, the son of Clarence and Mary (Hess) Gruper. He was baptized and confirmed in the Presbyterian faith in Cambridge, WI and grew up in that area residing with his grandparents.
James lived and worked in Wisconsin, Illinois, Michigan and Minnesota. While working in Michigan, he and his wife Donna lost a young daughter- Donna Mae. Jim worked many common labor jobs in farming and manufacturing and processing coal. He also was employed by Union Carbide Company for 12 years as an oxygen annalist.
When Jim moved to the Minneapolis area, he was employed by the railroad in the grain transport division. It was there he met his second wife Lucile Skaug. His last permanent address was Brookside Manor in Montevideo.
Jim was known as a kind, generous man and a loyal friend to everyone he knew. He liked old time country music, traveling and bird watching. He was a friendly, caring individual who extended his gentle ways as a live-in companion to many elderly people following his retirement. He did this well into his early 90’s. Two of Jim’s most memorable life events, as he would share, were living through the Great Depression and attending the 1934 World’s Fair. He will be deeply missed by all who knew him.
In the early morning hours of Sunday Sept. 6, 2015, Jim was called from this life while a resident of the Granite Falls Manor. He was 95 years of age.
He is survived by his favorite niece- Viola Sebring; two additional nieces- Marlene & Donna; cousins Roger & Randy LaVoie; daughter Sharon; 2 grandchildren and 2 great grandchildren; numerous extended family, cousins and friends.
