Ione Mae Thang, Age 98, of Alexandria, Minnesota (formally of Clara City, Minnesota) passed away at Knute Nelson under hospice care on September 18th, 2017. Ione was born on May 21st, 1919 in the township of Lund, near Melby, Minnesota. She was the third of ten children born to Edwin and Ida (Palmquist) Johnson. Ione's family moved several times in her childhood during the Depression years before settling in Maynard, Minnesota, where she graduated from high school in 1937.
On September 22nd 1940, Ione was united in marriage to Everett L. Thang at the Maynard Lutheran Church. In their early years they resided in Maynard, Sacred Heart and finally settled in Clara City in 1951. In 1956, Everett & Ione built their home where she resided until moving to Alexandria in August of 2016 to be near her family. Ione was a proud stay-at-home mother for their two sons Steven & Michael. Ione’s passions were cooking, baking and gardening; geraniums being her specialty. Ione was active in church, bible study, quilting circle and the WELCA. Ione loved to travel. One of her fondest trips was with Immanuel Lutheran Church to the Holy Land in 1979.
Ione was preceded in death by her husband Everett of 37 years; son, Steven in 1995; parents; Edwin and Ida Johnson; brothers; Glenn, Lester, Allen, Ross and Leonard (in infancy); sisters; Helen, Vivian and Lois; former daughter-in-law Laurie. Ione is survived by her son; Michael of Evansville, MN; daughter-in-law Colleen (Steven) Thang of Sauk Centre, MN; five grandchildren; Jeff (Lisa Messer) Thang, Catherine (Jason) Beste and Chad Thang all of Sauk Centre, MN, Amy (Aaron) Mickey of Syracuse, UT and Ryan (Mallory) Thang of Alexandria, MN; 7 great-grandchildren; Luke Thang, Sarah (Adam) Moritz; Jenny (Joe) Coenen, Nicole Bailey, Mackenzie, Landyn and Macy Thang; 10 great-great-grandchildren; Alexis Thang, Jackson, Austin and Marcus Moritz, Zachary Thang, Jayden and Landyn Coenen ,Makenna Bailey, Brady Rieland, Kade Lemke; brother; DuWayne (Pete) of Montevideo, MN along with numerous nieces, nephews and cousins.
A celebration of life service will be held at the Immanuel Lutheran Church in Clara City at 11AM on Friday; September 22nd, 2017. Visitation will be held one hour prior to the service. Following a church luncheon, service of interment will be at the Christina Lake Lutheran Church Cemetery, Melby, MN at 3 PM.
