On Saturday, July 23, 1910, a daughter was born to Marie and Reverend Paul Kumpf in Preston, Minnesota. She was baptized Hedwig Elizabeth and later nicknamed Betty.
Due to her father’s pastoral duties, the family eventually moved to Clara City during Betty’s senior year in high school. She went on to attend Augustana College in Sioux Falls and on February 12, 1933, exchanged marriage vows with Gordon A. Yock. Their union was blessed with three children: Marjorie, Karen and Laird.
For a number of years, Hedwig and Gordon lived in Spicer, Minnesota and Clearwater, Florida. Gordon died at the Rice Memorial Hospital in Willmar in August of 1983 and for a few years, Hedwig continued to spend time in Florida. In 2008, when her health began to fail her, she moved to the Clara City Care Center. She died there on Friday, June 20, 2014 at 103 years young.
Survivors include her daughters: Marjorie Willingham of Memphis, Tenn; and Karen Bigalk of Annandale; her son Laird Yock of South Portland, Maine; 8 grandchildren and 17 great grandchildren. She was preceded in death by her husband, her parents and her sister Clara Dona.
