Hazel Irene Allchin was born on March 31, 1921 at home in Sioux Agency Township to Walter and Agnes (Seagren) Allchin. Hazel was baptized in the Methodist Church in Wood Lake and confirmed at Yellow Medicine Lutheran Church and she attended school in Hanley Falls graduating in 1940, the first class to graduate in the gym. January 1, 1941, Hazel was married to Myron ‘Mike’ Martin in Granite Falls. They were blessed with three children: Kay, Alan and Arlen. Together, Myron and Hazel farmed south of Hanley Falls until moving to Hazel’s family farmstead and in 1982 they retired and moved to Hanley Falls. The majority of her life Hazel was a farm wife, mother and grandmother. She also worked in the laundry at the Granite Falls Hospital and retired in 1983. Hazel loved to laugh and have a good time. Many good times were had around the kitchen table playing any game of cards, Yahtzee or Rummikub accompanied with a little lunch. She embroidered numerous dish towels, spent countless hours reading, crocheting and quilting. She was involved in Birthday Club, Alter Guild, Senior’s in Hanley Falls and kept active walking and going to coffee at the Legion and at Granite Ridge. Hazel is survived by her three children: Kay (David) Bestland of Granite Falls, Alan (Sue) Martin of Russell and Arlen Martin of Hazel Run. Her grandchildren: Brenda Bestland of Pittsburgh, PA, Bruce (Jennifer) Bestland of Granite Falls, Shannon (Dave) Geihl of Cottonwood and Kelly (Joe) Kimpe of Minneota. And, her great-grandchildren: Bryant, Shaun and Channing Bestland, Thomas and Jarrett Geihl, Stephanie, Brenden and Isabelle Kimpe. Nieces and nephew: Susan (Dawayne) Preuss, Bonnie (Art) Krueger, Cathy (Cleo) Eisenlohr, Teri Wichlacz and Phil (Brenda) Stevens. She was preceded in death by her parents, Walter and Agnes, her husband, Myron, her brother, Archie and his wife, Joyce; her sister Helen and her husband, Gene Stevens and an infant grandson.
