Hazel Carlson

March 1, 1912 — March 2, 2008

Hazel was born on March 1, 1912, the daughter of Fredrick & Dagmar (Levander) Harvey, in Hibbing, Minnesota. She was baptized in the Methodist faith. Hazel graduated from the Hibbing High School and attended the junior college in Hibbing. She went on to the University of Minnesota for a Nursing Degree. She returned to Hibbing and worked at the Rood Hospital. Hazel was united in marriage to William Carlson on June 28, 1934, in Hibbing. Together they operated and owned the Ben Franklin Store in Hibbing for a few years and then moved to Wheaton in 1936, where they also operated a Ben Franklin Store. She was very active with Gustavus Adolphus Lutheran Church and was past President of the American Legion Auxiliary in Wheaton. They moved to Granite Falls in 1993. Hazel enjoyed sewing, knitting and making cards on her computer. Her greatest joy was spending time with her grandchildren. She made quilts for each one of them. In the early hours of Wednesday, Feb. 27, 2008, Hazel was called from this life at the Granite Falls Municipal Hospital. She was 95 years of age. Hazel is survived by her daughters: Nancy (Carl) Aus of Granite Falls and Audrey Carlson of Granite Falls; fourteen grandchildren; 33 great grandchildren and two great great grandchildren. She was preceded in death by her parents, her husband in 1998, son John in 1959, grandson in 1971, granddaughter in 2004, a sister Edna in 2008 and a brother Ray in 1972.
