Harley Ammermann was born on August 8, 1931, in Clara City, MN, the son of Harry D. and Marie (Schwitters) Ammermann. He was baptized and confirmed in the Christian faith at Bunde Christian Reformed Church and attended District 67 Country School. He worked on the family farm until age 19 when he enlisted in the United States Air Force and attended military training education in Columbus, Ohio and Cheyenne, Wyoming. He served his country in the US Air Force from 1951 to 1954 during the Korean Conflict and was stationed for two years in Germany.
Following his honorable discharge, Harley returned to the Clara City area and began employment as a diesel mechanic for Deruyter Brothers, Louis Boike and Duininck Brothers Construction. He was united in marriage to Clarice Barney on June 27, 1958 in Bunde Christian Reformed Church. In 1968, Harley opened his own shop in Clara City. He operated his shop with great pride until retiring in 2011.
Harley loved his Lord and was a faithful member of Bethany Reformed Church and served as deacon. Harley was a gifted mechanic and welder. He built all types of farm equipment including sugar beet harvesters, and defoliators for WIC Inc. His greatest love, however, was re-building and upgrading old cars and pickup trucks. He had a talent for not only the detail work, but for making the vehicles he worked on go faster. Harley also loved to spend time with his family at the lake on Sundays and watch his grandchildren play sports. He also liked snowmobiling and the outdoors.
Harley held to a high standard of honesty in serving his clientele. Following a severe illness as a young man, Harley always attested to looking forward to the day when he was called home to be with his Lord and Savior. That day came this past Friday, April 8, 2016, as Harley passed peacefully while a resident of the Clara City Care Center. He was 84 years of age.
He is survived by Clarice, his wife of 57 years of Clara City; his children- Thomas (& special friend Sandra Bruns and son Kris) of Clara City, Brenda (& Jeff) Maus of Elko, and Gregory of Clara City; grandchildren- Shaun, Cory and Amanda Maus, Paige, Faith and Colton Ammermann; brother-in law Melvin Marcus of Prinsburg; sisters- Dorothy (& John) Alderks of Renville, Marjorie (& Myron) Bonnema of Prinsburg, and Corrine (& Gary) Bonnema of Willmar; brothers- Gordon (& Karen) Ammermann of Arkansas, Wallace (& Gail) Ammermann of Lake Lillian, and Willis (& Jolene) Ammermann of Renville; three great-grandchildren Aya, Odan and Savannah Maus and numerous nieces, nephews, cousins and extended family.
