Known for his hardworking hands, unwavering loyalty, and no-fuss attitude, Gerry lived a life of quiet purpose and steady commitment. He was a man who didn’t need attention to have influence—his presence spoke volumes, and his actions said more than words ever could.
Gerry’s story began—and ended—with farming. He spent his formative years with the Ryks family, working the land alongside the Ryks boys and getting into his fair share of mischief along the way. They didn’t just offer him work—they offered him a place, a pickup to drive, and always a full tank of gas. That generosity stuck with Gerry, and it shaped how he showed up for others throughout his life.
From the very beginning, Gerry’s work was rooted in agriculture. Whether it was working as a hired hand, putting in time at the beet plant and elevator, or eventually striking out on his own with Gigstad Trucking and farming—his career path was steady and grounded in the rhythms of the land. He was a jack of all trades who could fix just about anything, and he took pride in doing work that mattered.
Gerry wasn’t someone who needed recognition or applause. He just wanted a job well done and to know the people he cared about were okay. That’s how he loved—through action, through consistency, and through always showing up. He took care of his family and friends in a way that didn’t draw attention, but made a lasting impact. Gerry wasn’t a man of big, showy emotions, but his loyalty ran deep and his friendships were steadfast. There also wasn’t much that could top a shared glass of whiskey, good conversation, and a Merle Haggard tune to round out the day. He loved his family and was always there for Rita, Raina (Darin), Cole (Kelly), and Kelsey. His five grandkids—Oliver, Grace, June, Lincoln, and Hollis—meant the world to him. Others who will miss him dearly are his mother, Mary; siblings, Kathy (Jim) George, Lynn (Theresa) Gigstad, Jane (Chris) Kennedy, Mary (Mike) Jakel, David (Kerri) Gigstad; father-in-law, Doug Hayunga; sisters-in-law, Lanae Gimse, Dawn Santjer; and many nieces and nephews.
The world’s a little quieter now without him in it. But if you ever shared a drink, a story, or a moment of silence with him, you’re carrying part of him forward. And that’s a pretty damn good legacy.
