IN LIEU OF FLOWERS, MEMORIALS ARE PREFERRED
Gene was born on August 26, 1950 in Springfield, Ohio, to Floyd Eugene and Leona (Bradley) Hughes. He enlisted in the Navy on April 30, 1969 and served as a torpedo-man on the USS John C. Calhoun until February 28, 1973.
Following his discharge from the Navy, Gene took pride in working many various jobs until 1985, when he found his true calling in Emergency Medical Services (EMS). He started as an EMT in 1985, became a Paramedic in 1992 and a Registered Nurse in 2004. Gene was instrumental in the development, maintenance and management of the Emmons County Advanced Life Support (ALS) ambulance squad and Cardiac Rehab program. He started the Granite Falls Municipal Hospital ALS ambulance service and added a special transportation service. Gene shared his knowledge in teaching first responder, CPR and auto defibrillator usage, EMT and paramedic classes and ALS certification to multiple community members and colleagues. His passion was EMS and it showed in everything he did.
Gene loved living life to the fullest. He enjoyed spending time with family and friends, cooking, hunting, fishing, campfires, riding his Harley, spending time doing yard work and gardening. He will be remembered for his laugh, story- telling, and ability to see what was needed and get it done. He touched many lives and will be missed by family and countless friends.
Gene was confirmed in the Catholic Faith and was a member of the American Legion Post 54 of Linton and Post 69 in Granite Falls, MN.
His legacy will remain for generations to come and his memory will live on in the hearts of his family: his wife of 19 years, Cindi (Umber) Hughes, Granite Falls; his children, Kendra Lee Dapice, of Ohio, and children, Cassie, Shelby and Anthony Dapice; Darby Hughes and daughter, Kaylee Hughes; and Erin (Yancey) DeMoe, and their children, Harper, Everett, and Liam, all of Bismarck; his mother-in-law, Janice Umber, Linton; sisters-in-law, Melissa (Bob) Kramer, Nicki (Ray) Serr, and nieces and nephews, Zachary Serr, Lakin Kramer, McKenzie Kramer, Jessica Serr, and Michael Kramer; all of Linton; and two sisters from Ohio, Linda and Tracy and their families.
