Gary Wayne Kubly was born November 12, 1943, in Fort Dodge, Iowa, the son of Leonard and LaVon Kubly. He passed away March 2, 2012, at Regions Hospital in St. Paul, Minnesota. Gary was baptized at Rosendale Lutheran Church of rural St. James, Minnesota, and confirmed at Zion Lutheran Church in Clear Lake, Iowa. He graduated from high school in Ventura, Iowa. Gary continued his education at Mankato State University. After graduation in 1966, he enlisted in the U.S. Air Force where he served his country until his honorable discharge in 1968. He then taught science in Texas for two years. While in Texas, Gary met Patricia Fenlon. The couple was married on February 20, 1970. Later that year, Gary entered Luther Theological Seminary, receiving his Master of Divinity in 1974. Gary answered a call to serve as pastor for Our Saviors Lutheran of Dovray and Willow Lake Lutheran of rural Tracy, Minnesota. His next call was to Granite Falls Lutheran Church. He then served as Rural Life Coordinator for the Lutheran Churches of Minnesota, followed by St. Lucas and Israel Lutheran Churches of rural Cottonwood and Clarkfield. In 1996, Gary was elected to the Minnesota House of Representatives, and in 2002, he was elected to the Minnesota Senate. During this time, he continued to act as interim pastor for several rural churches. Gary is survived by his wife, Pat; their children, Matthew Kubly of Granite Falls, Andrew (Janet) Kubly of Crystal, and Erin (Steve) Rodgers of New Brighton; grandchildren Kaia, Joseph, Avery, Sadie and Nathan; mother, LaVon Kubly of Roseville; brother, Ron Kubly of Sherman, Texas; sister, Deanne (Alan Howard) Kubly of Oakdale; Pat's mother, Claire Fenlon Stringer of Olivia; and sister-in-law, Barbara Fenlon of San Antonio, Texas. He was preceded in death by his father, Leonard Kubly; father-in-law, Peter Fenlon; and brother-in-law, John Fenlon.
