Florence Lillian Thalberg was born on February 29, 1920 in Montevideo, Minnesota to Alfred and Amelia (Priem) Schroeder. She died peacefully on Sunday, October 16, 2016 at Homefront Assisted Living.
Dolly graduated with the Montevideo High School class of 1938. After a year of teacher’s training, she taught in rural schools for two years. She and Gordon Thalberg were married on June 22, 1941. When Gordy left for military service during WWII, Dolly went to work for Union Oil Company. She would visit Gordy at several of the bases where he was stationed. After spending six months in Jacksonville, Florida, she returned to Minnesota where she went to work for Zaiser’s Dairy. Upon Gordy’s discharge and return to Minnesota in 1945, Dolly became a stay at home housewife and mother to their three children. After the kids were grown, she re-entered the work force as a retail clerk with JCPenny for twenty years before her retirement.
Dolly was very active in the Montevideo community. She was a member of Our Savior’s Lutheran Church, serving as a substitute Sunday School teacher and co-chair of one of the women’s circles, volunteered with Cub and Girl Scouts, bowled in women’s league and was a member of VFW Auxiliary Post 380. In her spare time, her fingers were busy crocheting afghans which were donated to Veterans homes and hospitals in Luverne and Fergus Falls, Children’s Hospital in Minneapolis, Children’s School & Hospital in Sioux Falls as well as gifts to friends.
Cherishing Dolly’s memory are her children: - Sherri (& Babe) Gatchell of Granite Falls, Wayne (& Kathy) Thalberg of Montevideo and Irene (& Lewis) Kirton of Maple Grove; grandchildren: Jody (Angela) Gatchell, Dorian (Melanie) Gatchell, Sheila (Jerry) Koepke, Wade (Cecelia) Thalberg, Derek (Melissa) Thalberg, Scott (Cassie) Kirton, Brenda Stoffels and Amy (Steven) Eckman; 15 great grandchildren, 6 step great grandchildren, 2 great great grandchildren and many nieces, nephews, cousins and extended family.
She was preceded in death by her parents, her husband Gordy in 2007, and her sister Effie Morganroth.
