Eugene “Charlie” Andrew Harguth was born on August 18, 1945, at home in rural Chippewa County, Minnesota. He was the son of Arthur and Hazel (Uttermark) Harguth. Charlie, who gave himself his own nickname at age 3, grew up on the family farm. Charlie was baptized and confirmed at St. Clara Catholic Church in Clara City. He attended parochial school at St. Clara thru the 8th grade and then went to Maynard High School where he graduated in 1963. After high school, Charlie joined the National Guard and served for 10 years.
Charlie was united in marriage to Betty Hacker on April 8, 1967 at St. Clara Catholic Church in Clara City. They began their life together farming and moved across “the section” and raised their two children. Charlie farmed until 1989 when he started working in grain elevator construction and other agriculture related positions.
Charlie was a life long member of St. Clara Catholic Church. He served on the Granite Falls Golf Course Board and the Farmer’s Elevator Board in Gluek, Minnesota. Charlie was a proud member of the Clara City American Legion Post #485 where he served as Sargent of Arms on the drill squad and was a Commander.
Charlie enjoyed golfing, playing cards, bowling, dancing, motorcycling and snowmobiling. His lifetime enjoyment was riding horses together with their children. They were members of the Maynard Hawk Creek Saddle Club. The family took many camping trips with the horses, combining those two beloved hobbies created many treasured memories. When the grandchildren came along, Charlie continued riding with them until 2020. Seeing the smiles on their faces as they learned to love riding was his greatest joy. In retirement, Charlie started gardening and loved to share his harvest with others. He also began fishing recently and reeling the fish in was the best part.
