Erva Hokuf died at the Chippewa County Montevideo Hospital early Friday morning, October 31st, 2008. She was born Erva Lucille Highum on February 7, 1916 in Granite Falls, Minnesota to parents Peter and Belle Highum. Erva was baptized and confirmed at the United Lutheran Church in Granite Falls. On September 28, 1940 she and Wilburn Hokuf were united in marriage in Rock Rapids, Iowa. They lived all of their married life on their farm in Stony Run Township. After Wilburn's death in February of 1996, Erva moved into Montevideo, renting a home from Jim Dahlvang. She later moved into Burnsdale Apartments. As a member of Bergen Lutheran Church since her marriage in 1940, she was active in Ladies Aid, holding officer positions at various times. She was also an active Life Member of the VFW Auxiliary. When her health began to fail her, Erva became a resident of Clarkfield Care Center and later moved into Luther Haven Nursing Home. Although she was no longer able to drive her own car, she especially enjoyed when family and friends included her in bingo, dinner and other social outings. Erva is survived by one nephew, Richard Highum, and four nieces: Vickie Muro, Marcia Hanson, Karen Hemmingson and Pat Manthei. She is also survived by many friends and extended family members. Preceding her in death were her parents, her beloved husband Wilburn, 4 adult brothers, 1 sister in infancy and 3 adult sisters.
