Ernie was born January 31, 1918, in Melvin, Iowa, to Max and Lillian Rottunda. He graduated from Granite Falls High School in 1935. He was united in marriage to Doris Mae Bickel on July 29, 1939. They farmed together and raised their family north of Granite Falls for over 50 years until moving to Granite Ridge Place in November, 1999 . Ernie was active in the community, contributing his common sense and direct opinions as a board member of St. Paul’s Lutheran Church, Granite Falls School Board, Chippewa County Republican Party, and the Granite Falls Bank. At the time of his death he was the oldest living member of St. Paul Lutheran, an active member since 1927.
Ernie was preceded in death by his wife Doris in 2001, son-in-law Tim Vaughn, two brothers, Herbert, and Henry, four sisters, Veda, Edith, Dorothy and Ruth. He is survived by his children, daughter, Sandra (John) Wilsey of St. Bonafacius, MN; son, John (Barbara) Rottunda of Mankato, MN; daughter Susan Rottunda of Minneapolis, and brother Ted (Peg) Rottunda. Also surviving are six grandchildren, eleven great grandchildren, and three great, great grandchildren.
