Emma Koenen, 94, of Clara City, passed away on Saturday, November 6th at the Clara City Care Center. Funeral services will be held on Friday, November 12th at 1:30 pm at Bethany Reformed Church. Visitation will be held Thursday evening from 5 to 7 pm at Bethany Reformed Church and continue one hour prior to services at the church on Friday.

Emma Tolene Koenen was born August 7, 1927, the daughter of Thorvald & Anne Marie (Carlson) Laumb, in Montevideo. She was baptized and confirmed at Mandt Lutheran Church. Emma attended District #54 School in Mandt township and graduated from the Montevideo High School in 1945. She continued her education at Presentation College in Aberdeen, South Dakota, graduating in 1948, with a United States Army Cadet Corps of Nursing Degree.

Emma was united in marriage to Kenneth F. Koenen, at Bethany Reformed Church, on September 3, 1955. She worked as a RN in Montevideo, Boise, Idaho and the Children’s Hospital in St. Paul. She was also a homemaker and cook for all the hired workers on the Koenen Dairy Farm. She was involved with the Ladies Aide and taught Sunday School at Bethany Reformed Church.

Emma passed away on Saturday, November 6, 2021, at the Clara City Care Center. She was 94 years of age.

She is survived by her husband Kenneth; children: Lyle (Sandy) Koenen of Clara City, Kurt (Maria) Koenen of Clara City, Karla (Rob) Schwendemann of Watson and Paul (Lynnette) Koenen of Clara City; grandchildren: Joseph (Jennifer) Harker and their children Shiann & Logan; Eric (Melanie) Harker & Liberty & Axl; Levi (Jessica) Koenen & Lucas & Sunniva; Isaac Koenen; Shawn (Naomi) Koenen & Alison, Elizabeth & Sadie; Joshua (Shannon) Koenen & Kolten & Quinton, Matthew (Brittany) Koenen & Kendall, Asher & Emeric, Jaden (Holly) Schwendemann & Skyler, Emma & Jakobie; Kaleb (Jessica) Schwendemann & Elsa, Esmae & Emersyn; Brittany (Keith) Gordon & Evelyn & Cecilia; Rebeka (John) Scepaniak & Ivan & Nora; Patrick (Tami) Demo & Madilynn, Noah, Levi & Lindsey; Melisa (Bobby) Cantwell; Chris (Alicia) Kingsley and extended family and friends.

She was preceded in death by her parents, sisters: Ellen, Mabel, Thea, Anne, Olga, Julia, Signe & Alice; brothers: Ole, Christian, John & Tosten and her grandson Jason in 1982.
